FocusMe 8 on Mac: the Plans list with five plans.
1

What to block

Websites, in Safari and every other browser

Type a site, pick a ready-made list (Social Media, News, Video Streaming, Messaging, Gaming), or block the whole internet except the sites you allow. One list covers Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Brave and Edge. Safari is covered by FocusMe for Safari, a free extension from the Mac App Store; Chrome, Firefox, Brave and Edge use the free FocusMe extension, which makes URL detection faster and more precise.

What to block on Mac: a plan blocking 28 sites from the Social Media and News lists.

Mac apps and games

Pick from your Applications folder or type the app’s name. Steam, Discord, Messages, Mail, games from the App Store: if it runs on your Mac, FocusMe can block it or limit it. A blocked app is asked to quit, or closed at once if it ignores the request, with a message that says which plan did it. Rules that match a window title (one YouTube tab, a game inside a launcher) work once FocusMe has Accessibility permission, which it asks for on first run.

When it runs

Schedules and time limits that run themselves

A Quick Timer for the next hour. A weekly schedule that blocks social media from 9 to 5 on weekdays and leaves the evening alone. A Pomodoro cycle for a writing session. A multi-day plan for exam week.

Or give yourself a budget instead of a ban: 10 minutes of Reddit a day, three YouTube sessions of 10 minutes, and when it is spent the site is blocked until tomorrow. Screen breaks lock the screen at intervals you choose, with a countdown. The countdown window shows on every Space, so it follows you between desktops.

When it runs on Mac: a weekly schedule blocking 9:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday.

How strict

From a nudge to Enforced Mode

Four levels. Unlocked blocks just the same, but stopping is one click. Gentle Guidance asks you to type five random characters before a plan stops: a decision, not a reflex. Firm but Flexible adds a wait and a daily pause allowance. Lock it Down means 25 characters typed perfectly, then a wait, and no pauses.

Enforced Mode goes further: while a plan runs it cannot be stopped or weakened, FocusMe cannot be quit from the menu bar, and the plan can only ever be made stricter. On a Mac, a plan can also keep Activity Monitor, Terminal and the clock settings closed while it runs, so a schedule ends when it should, and Protect Uninstall keeps the app where it is. If you want a human in the loop, an accountability partner can approve a stop instead of a typing challenge.

How strict on Mac: Unlocked, Gentle Guidance, Firm but Flexible and Lock it Down, with the Firm but Flexible challenges shown.

Built for Mac

Safari and every browser

FocusMe for Safari from the Mac App Store; the free extension for Chrome, Firefox, Brave and Edge.

Apple Silicon and Intel

Runs natively on M-series and Intel Macs, macOS 12 Monterey or later.

Enhanced Window Detection

An optional permission that makes blocking faster, more reliable and lighter on the battery. FocusMe never records or sends what is on your screen.

Works offline

Blocking does not need an internet connection.

Lives in the menu bar

Close the window; FocusMe keeps working from the menu bar and starts at login.

Command line

Start, stop and list plans from Terminal scripts or launchd.

See where the hours went

The Activity tab shows active time per app and site, the distractions blocked and the time reclaimed, for today or the last seven days. Tasks keeps a to-do list beside your plans. The AI Coach reads your week and suggests concrete changes to your plans, applied in one click.

Activity on Mac: last 7 days, 41 hours active, 56 distractions blocked.

Frequently asked questions

Does FocusMe run on Apple Silicon Macs?

Yes. FocusMe runs natively on M-series and Intel Macs, on macOS 12 Monterey or later.

Does it block websites in Safari?

Yes. FocusMe for Safari, a free extension from the Mac App Store, covers Safari; Chrome, Firefox, Brave and Edge are covered by the free FocusMe extension. One list, every browser.

Why does FocusMe ask for Accessibility permission?

So it can read window titles. That is what lets a rule match one website or one window rather than a whole app. Blocking an app by name works without it.

Can I limit time instead of blocking?

Yes. Set a daily or weekly allowance for a site or app, a number of sessions, or a launch limit. When it is spent, the site or app is blocked until the next period.

What happens if I try to stop a plan early?

It depends on the strictness you chose. Unlocked stops in one click. The stricter levels ask for a typing challenge and a wait, and Lock it Down allows no pauses. An Enforced Mode plan runs to its end.

Is FocusMe free on Mac?

There is a 14-day free trial of everything, with no credit card. After that, monthly, yearly or lifetime plans; one licence covers 5 computers and 2 mobile devices.
