Key Differences

The Computer Is More Than a Browser

AppBlock’s desktop side is an extension for Chrome, Edge and Brave: websites in those browsers, and nothing for the apps and games on a PC or Mac. FocusMe is a desktop application first. It blocks websites in every browser and any app or game on Windows, Mac and Linux, and its Android and iPhone apps sync the same plans to your phone.

How Strict It Gets

AppBlock’s Strict Mode makes a block harder to undo, with a cooldown or a third party’s approval; on the free plan it is capped at 12 or 24 hours, depending on the phone. FocusMe has four levels on every device, and on the phone Lock it Down gives you no way to stop until the plan ends. On the computer, Enforced Mode goes further: while a plan runs it cannot be stopped or weakened, FocusMe cannot be quit, and the plan can only ever be made stricter. On Windows, a plan can also keep Windows Settings and Task Manager closed while it runs, and the Extra Protection Service keeps FocusMe running through restarts. On a Mac, a plan can also keep Activity Monitor, Terminal and the clock settings closed while it runs, so a schedule ends when it should, and Protect Uninstall keeps the app where it is. If you want a human in the loop, an accountability partner can approve a stop instead of a typing challenge.

Place and Wi-Fi Triggers

AppBlock’s profiles can switch on by location or by the Wi-Fi you’re connected to, as well as by time. FocusMe does not do that. Its plans run on schedules, timers and time budgets, and they sync between your computer and your phone.

Price

AppBlock has a free plan with limits (two or three schedules, depending on the phone) and Premium monthly, yearly or lifetime, priced in the app stores rather than on its website, with a 7-day trial. FocusMe is $17.95 a month, $119.40 a year or $449 once, with a 14-day free trial and no card, and one licence covers 5 computers and 2 mobile devices.

When AppBlock Is the Better Choice

If your distractions are all on your phone, and you rely on profiles that switch on at the office or on your home Wi-Fi, AppBlock is a good app and its free plan is enough to try it properly. If a computer is part of the problem, or you want a lock that holds on the desktop too, FocusMe is the one built for that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is FocusMe better than AppBlock?

If a computer is involved, yes. AppBlock is a strong phone app with place and Wi-Fi triggers that FocusMe does not have. FocusMe blocks websites in every browser and any app or game on Windows, Mac and Linux, syncs plans to Android and iPhone, and adds screen breaks, pause limits and Enforced Mode on the computer.

Does AppBlock work on Windows or Mac?

Only through browser extensions for Chrome, Edge and Brave, which block websites in those browsers. FocusMe runs on Windows, Mac and Linux and blocks websites in every browser and any app or game.

Which is stricter?

On the phone, both can make a block hard to undo: AppBlock with Strict Mode, FocusMe with Lock it Down, which gives you no way to stop until the plan ends. On the computer, only FocusMe has an answer: Enforced Mode, where a running plan cannot be stopped or weakened.

How does the pricing compare?

AppBlock has a free plan with limits, and Premium is sold monthly, yearly or for life in the app stores, at prices that vary by store and region. FocusMe is $17.95 a month, $119.40 a year or $449 once for 5 computers and 2 mobile devices, with a 14-day free trial (no card) and a 60-day money-back guarantee. Checked 14 October 2026.
