Key Differences

The Computer, Not Just the Phone

Opal runs on iPhone, Android and Mac. There is no Opal for Windows or Linux, so a Windows PC, where a lot of people’s work and gaming happens, is outside it. FocusMe started on the desktop: it blocks websites in every browser and any app or game on Windows, Mac and Linux, and its Android and iPhone apps sync the same plans to your phone.

How Strict It Gets

Opal’s Hard Mode, a Pro feature, takes away the way out of a session, and on a phone that is a good lock. FocusMe gives you four levels on every device, from a one-click stop to Lock it Down, which gives you no way to stop until the plan ends. Enforced Mode goes further: while a plan runs it cannot be stopped or weakened, FocusMe cannot be quit, and the plan can only ever be made stricter. On Windows, a plan can also keep Windows Settings and Task Manager closed while it runs, and the Extra Protection Service keeps FocusMe running through restarts. On a Mac, a plan can also keep Activity Monitor, Terminal and the clock settings closed while it runs, so a schedule ends when it should, and Protect Uninstall keeps the app where it is. If you want a human in the loop, an accountability partner can approve a stop instead of a typing challenge.

Rules and Budgets

Opal’s free plan gives you one rule, with a schedule, a time limit and an open limit; more rules need Pro. FocusMe has no free tier after the trial, but every licence has unlimited plans: schedules, per-site and per-app time budgets (30 minutes of Reddit a day, say), launch limits, pause limits, and screen breaks that lock the screen at intervals you choose.

Price

Opal Pro is $19.99 a month, $99.99 a year or $399 once, with a free week on the yearly plan. FocusMe is $17.95 a month, $119.40 a year or $449 once, with a 14-day free trial and no card, and one licence covers 5 computers and 2 mobile devices. Opal’s yearly plan costs less; FocusMe’s covers your computers as well as your phone.

When Opal Is the Better Choice

If your distractions live on your phone and there is no Windows PC in your life, Opal is a well-made app, and its free plan is a fair way to try one rule. Its design and the Opal Score are a draw in their own right. If a computer is part of the problem, or you want the same plans on your desk and in your pocket with protection you can raise over time, FocusMe is the one built for that.
