StayFocusd is free, it has been in Chrome for over a decade, and its daily time budget is a good idea. People look elsewhere when they use another browser, need apps blocked, want the block on their phone, or want something that does not switch off from the extensions page. Here are five alternatives and the catch in each.
Prices and platforms checked on each vendor’s site on 14 October 2026.
A website and app blocker for Windows, Mac and Linux with Android and iPhone apps that sync to it.
A free, open-source browser extension for Firefox, Chrome and Edge with time-of-day rules, time limits and a lockdown.
A Windows and Mac blocker paid once, with a free version for timed website blocks and strong locks in Pro.
A subscription blocker for Mac, Windows, iOS, Android and Chromebook with scheduled sessions and a locked mode.
A screen-time app for iPhone, Android and Mac with scheduled blocks, app limits and a focus score.
| Tool | Platforms | Preis | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| FocusMe | Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone | $17.95 a month, $119.40 a year or $449 once | People who liked StayFocusd’s daily budget and want it to cover every browser, every app and the phone, with protection that holds. |
| BlutegelBlock NG | Firefox, Chrome, Edge | Free. | The same idea as StayFocusd in Firefox and Edge as well, with finer rules, still free. |
| Cold Turkey Blocker | Windows, Mac | Free version | One computer, paid once, every browser and (in Pro) every app. |
| Freiheit | Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, Chromebook | $8.99 a month, $3.33 a month billed yearly, or $99.50 once (on offer from $199 when checked) | Sessions across the computer and the phone at a low price. |
| Opal | iPhone, Android, Mac | Free for one rule | Phone-first users who want a polished app. |
If Chrome is your only browser and websites are the only problem, StayFocusd and LeechBlock NG are both free and good. The moment a second browser, an app or a phone is involved, an extension is the wrong shape. FocusMe keeps StayFocusd’s best idea, a daily budget, and applies it to every browser and app on Windows, Mac and Linux and on your phone, with strictness from a nudge to Enforced Mode. Cold Turkey for one computer paid once; Freedom for simple sessions across platforms; Opal for the phone.
LeechBlock NG, free. FocusMe covers Firefox through its desktop app and a free Firefox extension.
FocusMe’s Time Limit mode (a budget per day or week, counted as you use the site), and LeechBlock NG’s time limits.
FocusMe, Freedom and Cold Turkey. Extensions block websites only.
FocusMe, Freedom and Cold Turkey run as applications, so there is no extensions page to visit; FocusMe’s Lock it Down and Enforced Mode decide how hard a plan is to stop.
No card. Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone. 60-day money-back guarantee.
