BlockSite is the extension most people install first, and for a reminder it is fine. People look elsewhere when the block has to survive a trip to the extensions page, cover apps and other browsers, or run on a schedule without a subscription whose price keeps changing. Here are five alternatives and the catch in each.
Prices and platforms checked on each vendor’s site on 14 October 2026.
A website and app blocker for Windows, Mac and Linux with Android and iPhone apps that sync to it.
A free, open-source browser extension for Firefox, Chrome and Edge with time-of-day rules, time limits and a lockdown.
A free Chrome extension that gives you a daily budget of time on distracting sites, with a “nuclear option” to block everything.
A subscription blocker for Mac, Windows, iOS, Android and Chromebook with scheduled sessions and a locked mode.
A Windows and Mac blocker paid once, with a free version for timed website blocks and strong locks in Pro.

If BlockSite’s job is a nudge in one browser, LeechBlock NG does it free and better. If the block has to hold, cover apps and every browser, and run on a schedule, FocusMe is the alternative built for that: an application rather than an extension, with four strictness levels, Enforced Mode and an accountability partner, on the computer and the phone. Freedom and Cold Turkey are the other two applications on this list, each with its own trade-off.
LeechBlock NG and StayFocusd are free extensions. FocusMe has a 14-day free trial; its mobile apps are free to download.
FocusMe, Freedom and Cold Turkey. Extensions block websites only.
FocusMe’s Lock it Down and Enforced Mode, and Cold Turkey’s locks. An extension can always be disabled from the browser.
FocusMe and Cold Turkey block at the computer level, so every browser is covered. Freedom covers the major browsers through its app.
No card. Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone. 60-day money-back guarantee.
