Freedom covers more platforms than most blockers and its sessions are simple to start. People look elsewhere when they want a one-off price, a Linux machine covered, stricter protection than one locked mode, or app blocking that holds on a desktop. Here are five alternatives and the catch in each.
Prices and platforms checked on each vendor’s site on 14 October 2026.
A website and app blocker for Windows, Mac and Linux with Android and iPhone apps that sync to it.
A Windows and Mac blocker paid once, with strong locks and a free version for timed website blocks.
A free, open-source Mac app that blocks a list of sites for a set time, with no way to stop the timer early.
A free browser extension for Firefox, Chrome and Edge that blocks or limits sites by time of day with a lockdown option.
A screen-time app for iPhone, Android and Mac with scheduled blocks, app limits and a focus score.
| Tool | Platforms | Prezzo | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| FocusMe | Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone | $17.95 a month, $119.40 a year or $449 once | People who want schedules, time limits and session limits in one plan, four strictness levels, and an accountability partner. |
| Cold Turkey Blocker | Windows, Mac | Free version | One computer, one payment, and locks that do not bend. |
| Autocontrollo | Mac | Free. | Mac users who want a single hard block with no settings to argue with. |
| LeechBlock NG | Firefox, Chrome, Edge | Free. | Browser-only blocking with detailed time rules at no cost. |
| Opal | iPhone, Android, Mac | Free for one rule | Phone-first users who want a polished app and habit tracking. |
Freedom is the right choice if you want the simplest possible “block everything for an hour” across a Mac, a PC and a phone, and locked mode is as strict as you need. If you want the block to hold harder than that, or you run Linux, FocusMe is the closest alternative: a plan with a schedule, a budget or a session limit, strictness from a nudge to Enforced Mode, a partner who can approve a stop, on every platform you own. Cold Turkey for one computer paid once; SelfControl and LeechBlock when free matters most.
SelfControl (Mac) and LeechBlock NG (browsers) are free. FocusMe has a 14-day free trial of everything; its mobile apps are free to download.
FocusMe’s Lock it Down level asks for 25 characters typed perfectly then a ten-minute wait, and Enforced Mode cannot be stopped at all until the plan ends. Cold Turkey’s locks are also hard to undo.
FocusMe. None of the others has a Linux app.
FocusMe has time limits and session limits per site or app; Opal has app limits on the phone. Freedom, Cold Turkey and SelfControl block outright.
No card. Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone. 60-day money-back guarantee.
